The French Collection I (Room 28)
The French Collection I (Room 28)
The main focus of the French Collection is impressionism and early modernism. Several works were created in the cultural environment of Paris, hence the designation “French”, although several of the artists are of other nationalities. Impressionism is well represented by Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley, as is post-impressionism by Cézanne, Gauguin and van Gogh. Symbolism, naïvism, cubism and surrealism are also represented with works by some of the foremost modernist pioneers, such as Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Dufy, Léger, Masson, Metzinger, Rodin, Rousseau and Vlaminck.
