The Charles XII Hall (Room 15)
In the Charles XII Hall, 19th-century academic art is displayed. The term academic art refers primarily to narrative painting that depicts important historical events, biblical motifs, Old Norse or ancient myths. Gustaf Cederström’s The Body of Charles XII of Sweden Being Carried Home from Norway is one of the finest examples of Swedish 19th-century history painting. However, the depiction is not realistic; Charles XII was not brought home on a stretcher. Nevertheless, it is a powerful work that brings to life the end of Sweden’s period as a great power in a romantic, glorifying way. The late 19th century saw the emergence of socially engaged painting such as Cederström’s large The Salvation Army: Miss Booth visiting a Paris Tavern, 1886, or Nils Forsberg’s Acrobat Family before the Circus Manager, 1878.
