Come closer to Ivar Arosenius

The wilful and innovative artist Ivar Arosenius (1878–1909) has received his very own website. Artworks, texts and other documents have been catalogued in a searchable database that provides new possibilities to discover Arosenius’ life and work.

Ivar Arosenius’ untimely death in 1909 has cast a shadow over readings of the oeuvre – his art has often been interpreted in a biographical perspective. Many exhibitions and studies have repeated the same image of the artist’s life and work, based on the same selection of his most famous artworks, the majority of which can be found in the collections of the Gothenburg Museum of Art and Nationalmuseum.

Thanks to an extensive project, the popular conception of the artist can now change. The Gothenburg Museum of Art has participated in the project How is the artist evoked from the archives? The example of Arosenius, which aims to digitalize material about Arosenius from various museums and archives to make it all accessible in a common platform on the net. For the first time, the art public as well as researchers can access more material about Arosenius’ life and work in a single place – letters, photographs, diaries, notes and sketches from the Gothenburg University Library, among other places. Included are artworks and letters from museum collections and archives from all over the country, as well as many privately owned works, which also increase the scope and depth of the image of the artist. Here you can also find a digital reconstruction of Arosenius’ home in Älvängen, providing an intimate view of the setting in which the late works were created.

The website makes it possible to discover Arosenius’ work in its entirety, understand the artist in novel ways, and at the same time reassess established truths about the oeuvre. The material in the Arosenius project can be reached on the website (aroseniusarchive.org).

The Gothenburg Museum of Art owns 391 works by the artist in various techniques such as tempera, oil, watercolour and pencil drawings, 717 if one includes drawings in sketchbooks. Apart from individual works, 11 such sketchbooks have been digitalized and pigment analyses have been carried out to gain a more in-depth understanding of the artist’s technique. The project, which is financed by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Fund and the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, has been led by Professor Mats Malm of the University of Gothenburg. Head of Research Kristoffer Arvidsson has been responsible for the contribution of the Gothenburg Museum of Art, which has comprised research, photographing works, registration and conservation. Researcher Cornelia Cederleüf has carried out basic research on the museum’s works by Arosenius and provided them with a short description, basic facts, exhibition histories and literature references in the museum’s database, in effect creating a catalogue raisonné. Furthermore, collection registrar Kalle Väljemark, conservator Mariateresa Pullano and photographer Hossein Sehatlou have all participated in the project in their various areas of expertise.
