The Fürstenberg Gallery
The Fürstenberg Gallery is a private collection of primarily Nordic and French art from the last decades of the 19th century. The collection was created by Pontus (1827–1902) and Göthilda (1837–1901) Fürstenberg and was installed in their home in Brunnsparken in Gothenburg. In 1885, the gallery was inaugurated as the first private art gallery in Sweden open to the public.
The Fürstenbergs initially acquired works by the Düsseldorf School (an art movement in the 19th century that originated at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf) but soon began collecting en plein air painting by Nordic artists resident in Paris, not least the so-called “opponents” who were influenced by impressionism and criticised the Art Academy in Stockholm for its conservatism. During the 1890s many of the Paris-based Swedes returned to their home country and an interest in the Nordic nature manifested itself in atmospheric twilight landscapes.
The Fürstenbergs bequeathed their collection to the Gothenburg Museum – now the Göteborg City Museum – where it was installed in its own gallery in 1902. In 1925, the collection was relocated to the new art museum at Götaplatsen. Parts of the interior, such as Per Hasselberg’s ceiling sculptures with allegories of the inventions of the day, were also moved. The greyish-red walls and the preserved ceiling cornices are reminders of the design of the original gallery. One can see what it looked like in Carl Larsson’s watercolour Interior from the Fürstenberg Gallery (1885). The Fürstenberg Collection provides a unique insight into the dramatic Nordic art life of the 1880s and 1890s and comprises some of the most prominent works from the period.
