Baron Bengt Horn af Åminne (1623–1678) was one of the Swedish Empire’s most powerful men: field marshal, councillor, diplomat, and owner of Ekebyholm Castle, not far from Stockholm. In David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl’s portrait, Horn is depicted à l’antique, as a Roman general in parcel-gilt armour and a red cloak, his hand on his sword. The portrait was painted as a companion piece to that of Ingeborg Baner, Bengt Horn’s second wife. They had wed on 16 September 1662 and lived at Ekebyholm Castle. The two portraits were painted probably in 1662, shortly after David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl returned to Sweden after a long study trip abroad.
