Nordic Modernism (Room 27)
On display in the stairwell are paintings by Karl Isakson and Carl Kylberg, both born in 1878. Born in Sweden, Isakson spent much of his life in Denmark. At the beginning of the 20th century he developed a painting in which a richly-hued expression fused with a simplified pictorial language. Carl Kylberg’s painting was characterised by a personal, intense, lyrical concentration of colour, in which the whole took precedence over the details. Both were greatly significant for the younger generation of artists who later became known as the Gothenburg Colourists.
