Description
Exhibition History
Max Book was one of the most celebrated Swedish painters of 1980s. At the beginning of the decade he, Eva Löfdahl and Stig Sjölund formed the Wallda Group, who worked collectively with painting, installation and performance. In his paintings, Book explored the “gap” between representation and various aesthetics, allowing the painting to become a fabric on which different expressions confronted each other, which is reflected in the amalgamation of words in the titles of his works. Falnane (1986) is an example of this – an urban landscape of ruins executed on a freely hanging paper. Sometimes this gap was realised as a physical crack in the painting, often on unconventional materials such as hardboard, particle board or concrete.
