Lena Cronqvist (born 1938) is an example of an artist who takes a personal way informed by art history. In The Painter and Her Model (1984), she complicates—denies, even—the traditional relationship between the male artist and his female model. The woman is here both artist and model. Cronqvist shows us a female artist, charcoal pencil in hand, studying her own reflection. The woman, who looks a lot like Cronqvist, is stripped to the waist and seated barefoot on a stool in a bare room. A figure, perhaps from one of her own paintings, is looking at her assessingly.
