Mark Tobey was born in Wisconsin, but grew up in Chicago where he also studied art. He moved to New York in 1911. After having met the Chinese painter Teng Kuei in 1922, Tobey became interested in Chinese calligraphy, but also Arabic and Persian writing. He lived alternately in the USA and Europe. Tobey’s painting style is characterized by calligraphic brushstrokes that often cover the entire surface in transparent layers. His imagery has links to both art informel and abstract expressionism. An exhibition with Mark Tobey’s work was shown at Gothenburg Museum of Art in 1963.
