Wiking Svensson came from Värmland, and studied in Paris under the cubist André Lhote, among others. When he returned to Sweden, he settled down in Gothenburg and Dalsland but continued to exhibit internationally. In Paris, Svensson developed a non-figurative style of painting, with a dark palette. In his later works there is a hint of landscape, with streaks of light breaking through pastose patches, remiscent of solidified lava. In Encounter, these areas clash with a central surge of light.
