Hallström is often considered as belonging to neo-expressionism. He worked intuitively, sketching and making multiple changes until he found the right expression. Sources of inspiration were art history, Delacroix, Rubens, and Goya, but also space travel and literary works. The colour scale of Apocalyptic Scene I runs in red and white. Birds flapping their wings fly over a burning ocean. The motif is rendered in an bstract manner, in expressively painted fields of colour that cover the surface in broad sweeps.
