After he moved to Paris in 1947, Richard Mortensen soon turned to non-figurative painting. Composition in Blue was painted the following year. Here there are features of both art concret and a more lyrical abstraction. The colour fields are alternately clean and expressively painted, and are played out against each other and the blue background. Black lines form vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions in the image.
