Egill Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the same city in the thirties. He had his breakthrough in 1945 with colourful abstract paintings, the forms of which are reminiscent of masks or children’s drawings. Jacobsen was a member of the Cobra group. In 1959–73 he became professor at the art academy in Copenhagen. With its mask-like motif and rhythmic surface of coloured segments, Mask in Brown is typical of Jacobsen’s pictorial idiom.
