The girl, who is depicted from in front and above, is seated leaning forward with her hands in her lap. She turns her head up to meet our gaze. Her hair is put up, and she has a black velvet ribbon around her neck. Her dress has slid down revealing the one shoulder, and her pale, spotted dress spreads out around her like a fan. There is a hint of her shadow to the left, otherwise the background is blank. The dress can be recognized in a pastel in Ordrupgaard in Copenhagen and a drawing in New York. In the Copenhagen pastel, Mathilde appears gracefully charming in a way not evident in the more realistic Gothenburg version.
