Exhibition History
Bibliography
During his lifetime, Ernst Josephson was best known for his portraits. One of them he painted during his summer holiday on Dalarö in the Stockholm archipelago in 1883. Jeanette Rubenson is shown in a bust portrait in three-quarter face. Her sparkling brown eyes look past the viewer. Her richly decorated outfit, with gleaming gold earrings and brooch, lace-trimmed hat, and patterned jacket, contributes to the richness of the colours. In her ringed hands she holds a crotchet hook. To the left edge of the picture are some potted plants, crowned by a red amaryllis. Behind the woman is a window looking out over a garden and the neighbouring houses. The picture exudes light and colour. In its shadowless, colouristic interpretation, it is one of Josephson’s more impressionistic and French-oriented paintings, while the composition is classically austere. The portrait also has an ornamental quality reminiscent of Persian miniatures.
