Storm clouds loom on the horizon. The blue sky is reflected in the wet sand of the beach, where the horses are pulling their loads of seaweed to land to be used as fertilizer. Water fills the ruts that cut diagonally across the image; in the foreground, dark seaweed meanders in an Art Nouveau curlicue across the pale sand. Kreuger’s sensitive account captures the hues and atmosphere of the coast, but is also a credible portrayal of people hard at work.
