Exhibition History
In 15th century Christian Europe, magic came to be associated with evil; the “witches” who practised it were considered to be working with the Devil.

For centuries, The Witches’ Procession has been a mystery, which has continued to fascinate its viewers. The scene poses many questions and is open for multiple interpretations. Why is the witch carried by young men? And in what kind of landscape does the action take place, are we in the underworld or on a country road?

The inspiration for the witch in the picture probably came from a print by Albrecht Dürer, who was most likely inspired by one of Andrea Mantegna’s engravings.
