For Bruno Liljefors it was important that his paintings conveyed a total experience of animals in their natural contexts. In order to render an animal’s movements in the wild in an uncontrived manner, he makes them emerge out of the natural setting. The way in which he applies paint on the hare’s coat and the shrubbery accentuates the connection between animal and nature. The light brushwork also contributes to the description of the animal, its readiness to make a quick escape from suddenly emerging foxes and chasing dogs.
