The dramatic sky in the background animates the grey and sleepy winter landscape. Inspired by Düsseldorf painting, Rydberg romanticised an everyday country scene, probably somewhere in continental Europe. The tiny, struggling figures and the horse-drawn carriage become one with the snowy slush on the road. The central motif is the sky, burning with an intense light.
