Exhibition History
Tobias Bernstrup (born 1970) looks to identity and gender, but often in relation to the manipulated body, the cyborg. He works in a broad range, spanning everything from painting, sculpture, and performance art to video, photography, music, and modified computer games. One theme he often revisits is the impermanence of existence, identity, and the body. he constituent elements are often each other’s opposites: analogue meets digital, masculine meets feminine, music meets silence, enjoyment meets suffering. The artist’s various personas act as tools, metaphors, and options. In the photographic work Re-Animate Me (2002–20015), Bernstrup explores both the objectifying gaze and the boundary limits of body and identity. In the picture’s androgynous borderland, the artist’s self-staging shifts between fetishism, pornography, and fashion photography.
