The river that curves through the bottom right of the picture reflects the light from the overcast sky with its drifting clouds. On the left bank, two paths run through the grass; between them moves a figure dressed in black and grey, painted with only a few swift brushstrokes. A fence runs off to the left. On the right bank one has a glimpse of gold-green trees. On the rising ground in the background are whitewashed houses and a single roof shining red. The landscape has been executed with an abundance of rhythmic brushstrokes. The edges and details are undefined. Using shifts in colour and value, Sisley has accurately captured a sense of mood and place. In this, his meditation on vision, he elicits a strong sense of presence from a commonplace motif.
