Sven the Stevedore (1975) was a docker whom Hake depicts with a combination of raw and elegant modelling. From the clasped hands, the bronze twists up the shoulders and head of a torso with no lower body. The head is lowered, the expression thoughtful. The portrait approaches caricature, but, rather than being spiteful, it is a vivid account of a fellow being.
