Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) is one of sculpture’s most prominent innovators in Nouveau réalisme, known for his kinetic sculptures made from scrap. One such scrap-heap sculpture is to be found in the Gothenburg Museum of Art: Ratatouille (1965/1968), a deliberately wobbly construction of various metal parts. Tinguely’s art is playful, but is intimidating at times—everything always seems to be on the brink of collapse or explosion.
