Aristide Maillol’s main sculptural motif was the female body. Torso of Summer displays a segment of a female figure in the contrapposto position with one leg in front of the other and the shoulders twisted off-axis. Maillol’s sculptures are restrained, compact and harbour a density that bears testimony to his modern understanding of form. His solid shapes and defined volumes are reminiscent of Cézanne’s abstract idiom.
